Foil Stamping & Premium Finishes

Hot foil stamping uses a heated metal die (250-300°F) to press a colored foil film into the label surface under 200-400 PSI of pressure — the foil transfers as a solid metallic layer, resulting in maximum brilliance, opacity and tactile relief. Cold foil printing uses UV-curable adhesive printed inline on a flexo or offset press, then foil film is applied without heat — faster and cheaper but the metallic effect is 30-40% less brilliant and slightly less opaque. For luxury wine, spirits and cosmetics — use hot foil. For budget foil accents on high-volume products — use cold foil.

We stock 28 standard foil colors including gold (light, medium, dark, antique), silver (matte, satin, mirror), rose gold, copper, bronze, platinum, champagne, holographic (rainbow prismatic), pearl, opal, ice blue, mint, lavender, pink, red, green, blue, purple, black, gunmetal, chrome, and metallic teal. Custom foil colors can be commissioned at $380 per master roll (minimum 5000 meters). Most popular for premium cosmetics: rose gold and champagne. Most popular for spirits: antique gold and copper.

Yes — and these combinations are what create true luxury labels. (1) Foil + emboss = foil sits on a raised relief (used on premium wine labels). (2) Foil + spot UV = foil catches light from one angle, high-gloss UV from another (used on spirits and cosmetics). (3) Foil + letterpress deboss = foil in a sunken impression (used on boutique skincare). (4) Foil + soft-touch matte = foil pops against velvet-feel background. Foil adheres to: paper (best — absorbs adhesive, maximum bond), BOPP (excellent with proper primer), PET (excellent, used for industrial premium labels), Estate 9 wine stock (excellent), vinyl (good but requires lower temperature die to prevent warping). Foil does NOT adhere well to: silicone-coated release liners (irrelevant — these are discarded), textured kraft (foil bridges the texture peaks and looks uneven), and matte soft-touch coatings (foil rubs off without an over-varnish). We will recommend the right material for your foil design.

Yes for indirect food contact (label on packaging that touches food). Our standard hot foil is lead-free, conforming to EU 94/62/EC heavy metal limits and CONEG. For direct food contact (foil touches food surface) we use a dedicated food-grade foil with FDA 21 CFR 175.300 compliance — request this explicitly on quote. Migration test reports available on request. Common food-safe foil applications: chocolate bar seals, tea tin wraps, honey jar lid labels, wine bottle foils.

Two cost components for foil stamping on top of your base label price: (1) Foil plate-making: no die fee — currently waived on all foil orders (the standard $50-100 list fee is suspended). We retain the foil plate on file for 18 months at no charge. (2) Foil material surcharge: $0.04-0.12 per 1000 square inches of foil coverage. Reference: 1000 pcs of 3x4 inch labels with a 1x2 inch gold foil logo adds ≈ $0.18/ea to the base label cost. Above 5000 pcs the per-unit foil cost drops below $0.05. Cold foil pricing is typically 30-40% lower but visual impact is also lower.

No die fee is charged — plate-making is currently waived on all custom foil label orders. The same artwork reuses the same plate on every repeat order. We retain your physical printing plate and all associated artwork files free of charge for 18 months from your most recent order, ready for immediate reprint without setup delay; beyond 18 months, reorders require a new plate. Confidentiality: all artwork, brand assets and production files are stored on access-restricted secure storage visible only to your assigned production team. Mutual NDAs are available on request. Your designs are never shared with, sold to, or displayed for any third party, and never appear in our public portfolio or case studies without explicit written permission. If your design includes licensed or third-party-owned artwork, include the license/authorization at quote stage so we can validate print rights before the plate is cut.

Foil artwork must be supplied as a 100% black vector layer (K=100, no CMY) on a separate artboard or layer named "FOIL". Use knockout — do NOT overprint foil on top of ink because the foil die will not register perfectly to ink and the misalignment shows. Minimum foil line weight: 0.5pt (0.007 inch). Minimum foil text size: 6pt sans-serif, 8pt serif. Avoid foil halftones or gradients — foil is binary (there or not). Supply artwork as .AI, .EPS or vector PDF with fonts outlined. We provide a foil artwork template on request.

Properly applied hot foil is more durable than the underlying label material — it survives freezer (-40°F), ice bucket (4+ hours submerged), oil contact, mild abrasion and tape-pull tests. The foil layer is sealed under a UV-cured overprint varnish in our standard process, doubling resistance. Failure mode is adhesive failure (label itself lifts off container), not foil rub-off. For products subject to scuffing in distribution (wine cases, retail handling), upgrade to our scuff-resistant hard topcoat at +$0.02/ea.

Gold foil: solid reflective metal layer applied by heat+pressure — mirror brilliance, opaque, smooth tactile feel, premium price ($0.04-0.12/sq in surcharge). Metallic gold ink: gold-pigmented ink printed conventionally (offset, flexo or digital) — satin sheen, semi-transparent, can be printed as halftone or gradient, budget-friendly (+$0.01-0.03/sq in). Use gold foil for logos and accents under 5 square inches where brilliance matters. Use metallic gold ink for large background areas above 10 square inches where foil cost would be prohibitive. They can be combined on the same label.

For custom foil comps on your specific artwork, $45 design fee includes 3 physical press proofs on your chosen material, delivered in 5-7 business days. Bulk production does not begin until you sign off on the press proof.

Yes — foil on clear BOPP creates a stunning "floating metallic" effect where the gold or silver logo appears suspended on glass with no visible background. Two techniques: (1) Direct foil on clear BOPP — foil is visible from both sides, used for premium cosmetic bottles. (2) Reverse-print foil + white ink underprint — foil protected inside the label structure, used for oil-filled products where the foil would otherwise contact product. Design tip: combine clear BOPP + gold foil + minimal black text for a high-end minimalist look.

Minimum foil: a 0.5pt rule or 6pt character — below this the foil does not transfer cleanly. Maximum foil: 60% of label area — above this the die requires heat-management zones to prevent foil wrinkling and the cost-per-piece becomes uneconomical (better to switch to metalized paper or film with CMYK overprint). Sweet spot: 5-25% foil coverage. For full metallic backgrounds, request metalized BOPP/PET (silver backing) or gold-tone Estate 8 stock instead of foil — same visual, 30% of the cost.

Yes. Foil stamping takes 6-8 business days, compared to 4-6 business days for standard digital printing. Combination finishes stack on top of the foil timeline:

• Foil stamping (standalone): 6-8 business days

• Foil + spot UV combination: add 1-2 business days

Rush foil (24-hour) is available for an additional 20% of order total and limited to standard gold/silver foil on BOPP or Estate 9. Plan ahead — premium finishes are the most common production bottleneck for time-sensitive launches.

Both. Foil-stamped roll labels are wound on standard 1-inch or 3-inch cores with proper web direction (head-leading or foot-leading per your applicator spec) for fully automated labeling at up to 300 bottles per minute. Foil-stamped sheet labels are hand-applied or semi-automatic press-applied. Foil + emboss labels are slightly thicker (adds 1-2 mil relief height) — confirm your labeling machine can clear the crown of the bottle by at least 4mm to avoid emboss crush.

Holographic foil is a thin metallic foil layer stamped onto a regular label — rainbow prismatic effect applied selectively to specific design elements (logo, accent rule, brand name) while the rest of the label stays normal. Holographic vinyl is a full-facestock material where the entire label substrate refracts rainbow light. Use holographic foil for selective accents on otherwise-normal labels (sophisticated). Use holographic vinyl for full-label attention-grabbing rainbow effect (bold, novelty). Both can be combined with CMYK printing on top.
