Foil Label Artwork Guide: How to Prepare Files for Custom Foil Printing

Foil label artwork should clearly separate the printed design from the foil area, preferably using vector files and a dedicated foil layer. A clean artwork file prevents the most common foil production errors and lets us move straight from prepress check to production without back-and-forth.

03 How to Mark the Foil Area

The single most important step in foil artwork preparation. Get this right and most downstream problems disappear.

Separate Layer Named “Foil”

Place every foil shape on its own layer. This lets our prepress team toggle the foil view and export the die file cleanly.

One Solid Spot Color

Mark foil with one solid spot color (typically 100% black). Tints, gradients and opacities are not foil-friendly.

No Gradients in Foil Areas

Gradients cannot be foil-stamped — the foil is either present or not. Convert any gradient to a solid shape.

Keep Foil Shapes Clean

Avoid stray points, open paths and overlapping shapes. The foil die is cut from your vector path exactly as supplied.

Avoid Very Small Foil Details

Thin strokes and tiny serif type fill in during stamping. Reserve foil for solid shapes and larger marks. The common foil label defects guide explains how artwork and process issues can appear in the finished label.

Use Vector Paths Only

Every foil shape must be a true vector path. Raster effects (shadows, glows) inside the foil layer will not stamp.

04 Foil Detail Starting Points

Use these values to plan an artwork review—not as guaranteed LabelsAgent production limits. Published guidance differs by foil, die, substrate, machine and artwork geometry.

Positive foil text
A 6 pt hot-foil benchmark appears in ECMA guidance. Treat 4–5 pt type as a high-priority proof item, especially with fine serifs.

Reversed text
Reversed counters can fill in. Converter guidance varies by font and process, so small reversed type needs more clearance than positive text.

Use 0.20 mm as a literature-informed hot-foil starting point. Artwork at 0.15–0.20 mm should be reviewed on the selected material.

Use 0.30 mm as a conservative literature starting point. Adhesive spread or heat-and-pressure fill-in can close narrower reverse gaps.

Borders & small logos
A border is not automatically equivalent to a straight line. Corners, counters and close spacing make small marks proof-dependent.
Review geometry
Dense patterns & solids
Dense lines can bridge while large solid areas can expose uneven transfer. Separate these tests when possible instead of forcing one setup to do both.
Test separately
QR codes & barcodes
Keep machine-readable codes in high-contrast print unless a finished physical sample is scan-verified under the intended lighting and curvature.
Print preferred

Hot foil control factors: foil grade, die, temperature, pressure, dwell, speed and substrate texture.

Cold foil control factors: adhesive chemistry, anilox/wet volume, UV output, speed, surface energy and registration.

Geometry · Zones

05 Bleed, Safe Zone, and Cut Line

Three geometric zones every foil label file must define. Visualize them before you start designing.

Bleed Area

Artwork that extends past the trim edge. Prevents white borders if the die-cut shifts slightly. Typically 2 mm outside the trim line.

Trim Line

The final cut edge of the label. This is where the die cuts through the substrate.

Safe Zone

Inside the trim line. Keep all critical content (logos, text, barcodes) inside this zone so nothing important is cut off.

Die-Cut Line

The vector path the cutting die follows. Supply on its own layer so the die-maker can export it directly.

Kiss-Cut Line

For stickers and sheet labels — a lighter cut that scores the label without cutting the backing. Supply on a separate layer.

Layer Naming

Name layers clearly: “Print”, “Foil”, “Cut”, “Kiss”. This makes prepress faster and prevents die mistakes.

06 Common Artwork Mistakes to Avoid

The errors we see most often in customer-supplied files — and how to fix each one before you upload.

Foil Area Not Separated

Foil flattened into the print layer. We have to rebuild the foil layer before production — avoidable with a separate layer.

Keep foil on a dedicated vector layer named “Foil” before export.
Low-Resolution Logo

Raster logo pulled from a website. Pixelated edges spoil the foil die sharpness.

Use the original vector logo file (.ai or .svg) so the foil die is sharp.
No Bleed Added

Artwork ends at the trim line. Any die-cut shift shows a white edge on the final label.

Always extend artwork 2 mm past the trim line on every side.
Text Not Outlined

Missing fonts break the file when it is opened for die-making on a different computer.

Always “Create Outlines” on text before exporting the print PDF.
Foil Over Tiny Details

Foil on thin serifs or small QR codes fills in during the heat-and-pressure stamping cycle.

Keep foil on solid, larger areas. Print small text in CMYK ink.
Wrong Label Size

Artwork sized for a different bottle or box. The label does not fit the actual container.

Always confirm physical label dimensions against the packaging before export.
Missing White Ink Layer

For clear labels, light colors need a white ink underprint layer to stay visible on the product.

Add a “White” underprint layer behind any light foil or print on clear BOPP.

    We review the file against your chosen material, foil tone, label size and packaging surface. Flagged issues are returned with clear fix notes.

  3. Foil Area Verification Before proof

    We confirm the foil layer is clean, vector-based, free of tiny details, and aligned to the print artwork.

  4. Digital Proof Prepared Within 48 hours

    You receive a digital proof showing the print artwork, foil layer and die-cut line. Approve or request changes.

  5. Production Starts After proof approval

    Once the proof is approved, we make the foil die, set up the press, and begin the standard 6–8 business-day foil production window.

  6. Labels Are Shipped After production

    Finished labels are inspected and packed after production, then shipped using the selected delivery method. Transit time is separate from the 6–8 business-day production window.

10 Foil Artwork Guide FAQ

The most common artwork questions, answered by our prepress engineers.

Do I need vector files for foil labels?

Yes. Foil stamping requires a metal die made from your artwork, and that die must be cut from a vector path. Raster images (JPG, PNG) cannot be used to make a foil die. Supply AI, EPS, PDF or SVG vector files for any artwork that will be foil-stamped.

Can you help fix my artwork?

Yes. Our prepress team can redraw vector foil paths, adjust bleed, add a white ink layer for clear labels, fix text outlining and re-align front-and-back label pairs. Send what you have and we will quote any artwork cleanup before production.

Can I use Canva files?

Canva files are accepted as a starting point but they usually need cleanup before foil production. Export a print-ready PDF from Canva and our prepress team will convert the foil area into a proper vector layer. Complex foil designs may need to be rebuilt in Illustrator.

Can foil be applied to small text?

Foil can be applied to medium and large text, but very tiny foil text fills in during stamping because the foil is pressed into the substrate under heat and pressure. Keep foil text at a comfortable size and avoid thin serif strokes. Use print instead of foil for ingredient panels and disclaimers.

Should QR codes be printed or foiled?

QR codes should be printed, not foiled. The reflective surface of metallic foil can confuse phone cameras and the high-density pattern of a QR code does not stamp cleanly. Print the QR code in standard ink and use foil for the brand mark or logo nearby.

What is a foil layer?

A foil layer is a separate vector layer in your artwork file that defines exactly where the metallic foil should be stamped. It uses one solid spot color (typically 100% black) to mark foil areas, while everything else remains white. The foil layer is used to engrave the metal die that stamps the foil into the substrate.
