Match Materials to Roast Level & Tea Type

Coffee roast depth changes everything — oil content, surface temperature and shelf life all affect label choice. Light roasts stay dry; dark roasts weep oils. Here is how we pair the right material to each roast and tea type.

Artwork & Design Tips

Design Coffee & Tea Labels That Work

Four practical artwork tips refined across hundreds of coffee roasteries and tea brands. Get these right and your labels will perform on the production line and look beautiful on the shelf.

01

Origin & Roast Information Layout

Plan label space for coffee origin country, region, roast level, tasting notes and roast date. These elements are central to specialty coffee branding and consumer purchase decisions.

Recommended hierarchy: Origin (largest) → Roast Level → Tasting Notes → Roast Date (smallest, mono-coded).
02

Valve Cutout Planning

If your coffee bag has a one-way degassing valve, position the label to either accommodate a valve cutout or avoid covering the valve entirely. Provide valve position and diameter for accurate die-cutting.

Standard valve sizes: 20mm (most common) or 25mm. Send a bag sample for precise die-cut tooling.
03

Kraft Paper Color Variation

Brown Kraft paper has natural color variation between batches. Design with this in mind — avoid large areas of solid light colors that will look inconsistent. Use the natural paper color as part of your design.

Best practice: use white ink for type/contrast and let the Kraft tone show through negative space.
04

Variable Data Areas

For roast dates and batch numbers, plan a clearly defined blank area on the label. If using thermal transfer printing, ensure the area has appropriate contrast for printed text readability.

Minimum roast-date area: 35 × 12mm. Use a white or light patch for thermal-transfer readability.

FAQ

Coffee & Tea Label Questions

What label material is best for coffee bags?+

Brown Kraft paper is the most popular material for coffee bag labels due to its natural, artisan look that matches craft coffee branding. White BOPP is recommended for bags that need moisture and oil resistance, especially for dark roasts with heavy oil content.

White paper works well for dry coffee bag packaging at room temperature. For roasters using heat sealing, we recommend heat-resistant materials and adhesives rated for the sealing temperature range.

Can coffee labels withstand heat sealing?+

Yes. We offer heat-resistant label materials and adhesives that withstand the temperatures used in coffee bag heat sealing (typically 180–220°C / 356–428°F) without warping, discoloring, or losing adhesion.

This is critical if labels are applied before or during the sealing process. Tell us your sealing temperature and process, and we will spec the right material and adhesive combination.

What labels work best for tea tins?+

White paper and Kraft paper labels are ideal for tea tins. For premium tea brands, textured paper with foil accents adds a luxury touch that elevates perceived value. The rigid, flat surface of tea tins accepts most label materials easily without curvature concerns.

Vellum paper is a boutique choice for luxury loose-leaf tea gift packaging, and pairs beautifully with gold or copper foil stamping.

Do you offer roll labels for coffee roasters?+

Yes. Roll labels are the standard format for coffee roasters using semi-automatic or automatic bag labeling equipment. We provide precision-wound rolls with the correct unwind direction, core size (typically 76mm / 3 inch), and label count for your specific labeling machine.

Send us your labeler make and model — we will match the roll specs exactly to your equipment.

Can coffee labels include a one-way valve cutout?+

Yes. We produce labels with custom die-cut openings that accommodate one-way degassing valves on coffee bags, ensuring proper valve function while maintaining label aesthetics.

Provide the valve position and diameter (standard sizes are 20mm and 25mm) and we will create precise die-cut tooling. For best results, send a sample bag so we can verify dimensions before production.
